You’re right. The original Lansdowne plan by OSEG was supposed to fix the park for at least 30 years.
But OSEG has lost money every year so far.
To date, they’ve lost $82 million!
You could call it that.
OSEG wants $419 million to build new north-side stands, a new arena, new retail, and two tall towers on top of the stadium.
Yes, they did, using your tax dollars.
In the initial plan, OSEG promised they would last another 30 years.
And now, only a few short years later, they say they need replacing.
Maybe. However, using the existing stands meant that OSEG’s Lansdowne proposal was the cheapest.
If it weren’t for the North stands being repairable, the stadium would likely have been built by others at Bayview.
OSEG needed the “refurbished” stands to make their deal work.
Yes. OSEG gets new stands, a new event facility, more retail to rent, and housing to sell.
It’s like an Uber driver asking the City to buy them a new car so they can make more money driving Uber.
Maybe. In a democracy, all citizens should have access to the same privileges.
Doing otherwise looks like corruption, and I'm sure Ottawa isn't corrupt.
If you want to see if the City will subsidize your business, email the city manager and see what she says.
Yes, it is, but these tall towers allow OSEG to claim that the City will get a facility for nothing.
You see, they will use 75% of the taxes from the new tower to pay off the $419.6 million.
Yes, they are. But here, it will be used to pay for the new facilities for OSEG.
Only 25% will go to city services.
Makes sense. If the City needs only 25% to pay for services, we should all be due a significant tax rebate. You can email the Mayor (Mark.Sutcliffe@ottawa.ca) and ask when you can expect yours.
The housing crisis, potholed roads, the LRT – a lot needs fixing in Ottawa.
There are better uses for $419 million than bailing out OSEG.
Yes, that's what they were promising. It helped them get approval from City Council to go ahead. And now they're saying that the City won't get anything back at all. I'm sure it was just an honest mistake.
Do we really?
There are firms that can run a stadium, the City can run the park, and any number of developers could buy up the buildings.
OSEG has failed; it’s time to let others give it a try.
The Redblacks can play in a stadium run by others. Most teams do.
The new firm may even do a better job than OSEG.
If OSEG pulls the plug on the Redblacks because the City didn’t give them $419 million of your tax dollars, then maybe their primary interest wasn’t running a football team
The vote to give OSEG $419 million of your tax dollars is happening November 3rd.
Reach out to your Councilor and the Mayor today and tell them we don’t need another LRT fiasco; this deal sucks.
